The Rose Bowl

Say what you want about the BCS, it’s better for college football than the old bowl invitational system. Under the old system Michigan would have played undefeated USC in the Rose Bowl and undefeated Oklahoma would have played somebody else. We then might have been left with two undefeated teams at the end and everybody in the world debating about which one should get the number one ranking. The pollsters and the pundits could have argued until the cows came home but we never really would have known who was the best team because they never would have played each other.

Under the current system USC and Oklahoma get to settle it Tuesday on the gridiron just like God intended and the Rose Bowl instead pitted Michigan against Texas to give us one for the ages. I was glad to see both teams get there because I have roots in both states but deep down I wanted Texas to win. I wanted validation for my lifelong contention that Texas is more serious about football than Michigan and that their high school teams would mop the floor with our teams.

While we might never get to see them compete at that level the Rose Bowl gave us a game at the college level which turned out to be one for the ages. The game had everything: suspense, highlights, athleticism, and gutsy calls. I’m saying this as an article of faith because I didn’t actually watch the game except for a series of downs early in the third quarter. I couldn’t have told you at that point which team was going to emerge victorious but Guy in the UNLV Jacket would have weighed in with his old addage that the team with the most black guys wins. Wait, that was in basketball. Never mind. But it was a great game and it was just icing on the cake that the Longhorns nailed a field goal at the end of regulation to win the game.

In other news I injured my hand playing golf yesterday. It was really unfortunate timing because I had just gotten to (and I’m not lying) five under par when the injury occurred which left me unable to hit long drives for the rest of the game. I finished a disappointing nine over but I still came out ahead of Ken. Who would have known you can injure your hand on an arcade video game at the bar?

I ended the night by getting hammered and saying all sorts of outrageous things to Rachael and her friend. I kept suggesting racist karaoke songs for her to sing so I could laugh when she got beat up but she didn’t fall for it. I talked politics with the dude. My main point of contention was that providing aid to people hit by tsunamis only encourages them to have more tsunamis and that we know they’re just gonna spend the money on liquor anyway. Then I ordered some blue shit and the next thing I knew I woke up at home.

My cue stick and digital camera made it home with me too so I guess that’s ok. I guess I just made up for not going out on New Years Eve by taking it out on the first. Happy 2005.
